New puppies and skin problem?

I am a foster mom to two 4 week old golden retriever girls. I have been bottle feeding them since they were a week old. The person that is taking them has bought my supplies and is buying hartz replacement formula. About 3 days ago I noticed one of the girls has a bump on her leg followed by what looks like dry skin then today I noticed the second girl has the dry skin on her front

paw. From what I have read from this website and others the dry skin could be from their diet. The dry skin doesn't seem to be spreading. I have a golden myself and he is very healthy. I haven't let them play in grass because I didn't want them getting sick. the owner took them to a park but said she kept

them on a blanket. I have now started trying to introduce semisolid foods into their diets for hope that there are more omega 3 fatty acids in the food than formula. I'm not sure what to do about their skin. It doesn't seem to be bothering them.

New puppies and skin problem?
Could be mange or ringworm or could be nothing but dry skin. I would have a vet check them out. Good luck
Reply:i would probably take them to the vet if yu're really concerned. I have a pug and sh e gets pimples all the time. We thought something bad was wrong at first, but once we found out what was really going on, it wasn't as scary.
Reply:if it is occuring on more than one pup you may want to get the pups to the vet for a skin scrape. This will show whether or not they have sarcoptic or demodectic mange. (Demodex can be passed to pups by the mother) Also, if you have a black light, turn the lights off and shine the black light over the patches of dry skin... if it glows in bright green then you are having a ringworm problem. Id look into both before spending high prices for skin healthy food!
Reply:You need to take them to the vet so he can tell you what the problem is and treat it accordingly. The new owner should be willing to pay for this too, or a rescue or shelter if you went thru one.

I would suggest to check the symtpoms on that site, but either way I would go to the vets just to be sure.
Reply:I would get them off the Hartz and try something else, maybe something from the vet or the pet store. Do they have fleas? Could be an allergy to something. You said one has dry skin. One vet suggested putting a TBSP or so of mineral oil in some water and rubbing that on my dog. I noticed that my dachshund preferred to lay by the heat vent in cold weather, and that dried his skin out. Are they kept warm? What about detergent on the blankets they were on? Use something gentle.
Reply:My dog started with symptoms like this. As a puppy she had bumps that scaled over that did not seem to bother her at first. Then she started digging, her hair started falling out. I took her to the vet and a skin scraping was done, and it was something called red mange. It is not contagious to humans, it is transmitted from the mother to the puppies , even if the mother is not showing signs. It is some kind of parasite in the blood stream and can be deadly if not treated. My dog was treated with a strong antibiotic and steroid shot, followed by 3 months of oral drops and a bath in a special shampoo every three days. It has to be treated aggressively. Some vets recommend that female dogs that have it be spayed so that , even though asymptomatic , do not pass it on. My dog healed, but now 4 months after the treatments I think it is coming back. So please take the dog to the vet for a skin scraping, because if this is what it is the sooner you treat it the easier it will be to manage. Good luck.
